Do I Still Love my Black Stairs?

We’ve been living in our new home for just over a year. I feel like that is long enough to really get a feel for a space, but the newness still hasn’t worn off yet. My black stairs are quite popular and at the time, seemed like a bold design choice. Black staircases are definitely having a moment and I am please to say that I still love our stairs!

I was very adamant about not having carpeted stairs. First, I knew our staircase was a focal point in the great room and entryway. I just didn’t think the carpet would tie in well with the flooring on our main level especially because the carpet upstairs is a very light grey. I also dealt with carpeted stairs in our other two houses, and just have never liked it. However, it was a bit challenging to come up with a plan for the stairs and stay within our budget. Staircases can be a bit spendy when building because not only are they somewhat complicated to build, there are a lot of parts to consider. Once we decided carpet was out, we then thought about wood, but again that would be a tricky transition since our flooring is LVP on the main level. A painted staircase seemed like our best option, and I knew we could stay within our budget since I could paint them and source all the parts myself.

I really did keep it simple in terms of the newell posts, banisters and spindles. The spindles came black and I painted everything else. I think that since black is such a dramatic color, the rest can be simple. I love the contrast of the black against the white walls. It also is visually interesting and helps balance the grid style window in our great room. I would definitely make this choice again.

The only downside to black stairs is that they really show dirt. Since they lead upstairs to bedrooms and a tv room, no one ever wears shoes on them which I appreciate. Even still, they have to be vacuumed once or twice a week and wiped down every other week. This has become a chore for the kids, and no one complains too much when its their turn. I also get asked from time to time if about the kids or really anyone slipping on them. This really doesn’t happen. Even when they run down them, I’ve never noticed anyone slip. When we’ve had toddlers over, they have to be careful going up and down, but that’s generally the case with all stairs.

The plan is to add a runner in the near future. Mainly for protection, and it will help keep them looking clean. However, I am really not in a big hurry to get that done. I also will be adding a gallery wall soon. I’ve been collecting wall decor for a few months now, and have a couple special pieces I am really looking forward to showcasing there. The goal is to have that done before the holidays, and I will be sure to share!
