Great Room Featuring our Large Grid Window

Everytime I share photos of our great room, I get questions about two things…The large picture window and our rug. I figured it was high time I shared the details of this room even though it is far from finished and still very much a work in progress when it comes to furniture and decor. First the window was custom built from Pella windows. We worked with our local Builder’s First Source on our windows. That window was a headache! Of course good things take time and windows for all new builds were very much a pain point during the Covid building boom, but I was definitely questioning if the window would be worth the trouble. Our most frustrating point in the build process happened when we were told that the window which was already back-ordered had arrived damaged and would need to be rebuilt. We waited another month for it which in the big scheme of things was not a huge delay, but at the time it was stressful as our drywall was already done and we still had a giant hole in the side of the house. (it was weather proofed with plastic to protect our interior) I am happy to report that we could not be more thrilled with the window now that it is finished and we’ve gotten to enjoy it for a bit! It is the focal point of our home and I love that we can enjoy nightly sunsets from our great room. A huge bonus to living out of town is that you don’t have neighbors or any traffic so for us it was a no brainer to have a lot of windows.

The second most asked question I get is about our rug. I spent a lot of time shopping for rugs. I knew it would need to be decently thick and big since we did not do carpet in the main area of the house. Kevin actually fought me on this a little, but I am not a big fan of carpet in high traffic areas. Between living on a farm, having three children and pets, well carpet was just not something I wanted in the great room. Zero regrets on that as a nice rug and some decent slippers is really all you need. Plus the knowledge that rugs are easily replaceable is a huge bonus in my book. This rug I bought the week we moved in and unrolled it the same day I took the construction paper off the floor. Once I saw it, I knew the color scheme was perfect. It has creams and taupes, some burnt oranges and peach, the navy gives it contrast and the greens pull from the kitchen island. Plus it was very affordable! Here is the link. Charvi Distressed Medallion Fringe Rug. We have the 9x12 which is unavailable from amazon, but you might be able to track that size down from somewhere else. Our bedroom rug is also nuLoom and I love it as well and can vouch for the quality.

While, I am at it, our couches are both from Ashley Furniture. The end table is Hearth and Hand from Target. (currently sold out) My fiddle leaf fig tree which I am obsessed with was ordered from Costa Farms via Amazon. It is a super low maintance plant and the quality is beautiful. I was hesitant to order online, but Costa Farms has so many amazing plants, and our options are limited here in Eastern Montana.

Below is the view from our great room into our kitchen. I keep seeing that open floor plans are becoming less popular and that houses with traditional rooms are making a comeback. We always favored an open concept main room to maximize space and because I hated feeling so far away from the action when I was in the kitchen of our last two homes. This really works well for us and I do still feel like we have set spaces for each “room”. Our great room is really designated by the tall ceiling. Our dining area (not pictured but to the left of the kitchen) has three walls and is only open to the kitchen. Our entry way is designated by the staircase and entryway closet. So although it is open, there is still some structure to it.
