House Update - Exterior, Great Room & Kitchen

The house is so close to being done, and it’s all really starting to come together. When I started making decisions about the interior of the house, I had to really learn to trust my gut on a few things. We have a lot of gold/brass throughout the home, and while I know that isn’t for everyone, goodness am I glad I went with what I love. It really warms the house up, and has a classic and traditional feel. Plus it is 100% my style. Seeing the kitchen nearly finished has been the most rewarding as it is hands down where we not only spent the most money, but also where I spent the most time picking and choosing what would go in there. Our cabinets are a taupe color, and the island is a dark forest green. We have solid surface countertops around the perimeter which have tans, whites, black, and a bit of navy blue throughout. We will have butcher block on our island. The big farmhouse sink was the first thing I ordered for the kitchen, because honestly what’s a farmhouse without a farmhouse sink. Appliances are starting to make their debut, and its all starting to feel very real!

The exterior of the house is getting closer. The rest of the siding and finishing the front porch are really the main things that still need to be done. I do have to say that I am very excited for the front of the house. It was important to me that we melded design and function in our home, meaning that I not only wanted it to look like a traditional farmhouse with modern touches, but that the floor plan fit our needs. The black windows were something I knew I wanted early on, and I love the contrast they add to the white exterior. That isn’t to say that the windows didn’t come with some drama. (this was to be expected considering everyone has had window issues building within the last couple of years) Our windows came in unfinished wood on the interior and I was under the impression they would be finished black. Considering we had spent a good chunk of time waiting on windows it was decided that I would stain the inside of them black. This was a long and tedious process, but they are done, and I love them!

Our big window was the biggest item on our wishlist for both Kevin and I when we started the design process. Logistically, I don’t know if we really thought it all through (I know I didn’t) and I definitely questioned whether it would be worth it. It was not only back-ordered, but then arrived to our supplier broken the first time and had to be re-made. Now that it is in, I can’t imagine our great room any other way. It is just what we wanted and having the view of our farm and the sunset sure does make all the headaches worth it.

Flooring should be wrapped up this week, and the plumbing is just about done as well. There are a few little electrical items that will get taken care of soon, and we are waiting on a new propane tank. I am really looking forward to hot water, but other than that, the house is functioning. We don’t have heat yet, (not needed) but we do have AC! Then it will just be finishing work, the rest of the interior doors, and the stairs. The upstairs is finished, but I’ll share more of it when the boys’s rooms are done.

I’ll be breaking my next updates down into rooms as there is plenty to share! I share all sorts of updates on Instagram so if the Farmhouse is something you want to see more of, head over there!
